Shirley Sahrmann's Movement System Impairment Syndromes (MSI) courses offer the opportunity to learn how to properly observe, identify and treat impairments of the movement system.

Shirley Sahrmann, PT, PhD, FAPTA  is Professor Emerita of Physical Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri.  In addition to her numerous national and international presentations, Dr. Sahrmann has been a keynote speaker at the World Confederation of Physical Therapy, and at the Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Danish national congresses.  The MSI syndromes were developed by Shirley Sahrmann and have stood the test of time.  These syndromes are described in her books:  Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes  and  Movement System Impairment Syndromes of the Extremities, Cervical and Thoracic Spine.

Course Description:
In this course, participants will gain knowledge and skills to develop a structured approach to diagnosis and treatment of patients with movement system impairment syndromes (MSI).  You will learn to identify faulty alignment, movement patterns, and muscle imbalances using observation of movement as well as muscle length and strength testing.  Through this method,  the root cause of the patient’s complaints is addressed, rather than treating the symptoms alone.  The course provides both theoretical and supervised practical instruction in the respective body regions.

Course Goals:
*  Discuss basis of the movement system and movement system impairment syndromes (MSI) of neck and shoulder
*  Describe causal and contributing factors in MSI of neck and shoulder
*  Describe how to formulate a diagnosis and place patient into proper diagnostic category
*  Describe diagnostic categories for cervical spine, scapula, and humerus
* Describe and perform standardized examination format for cervical spine, scapula, and humerus
*  Describe specific corrective exercises and their progressions for neck and shoulder
